Watch your tone...

I promise not to go on and on and on about language but I came across this diagram today which made me smile (for some odd reason) and I thought it might help you visualize better what I am trying to learn.

Everything you say must be said in the correct pitch (tone) or you most likely won't be understood. Consequently, this is how my brain feels after a few hours of study sometimes.

I don't envy you, Merri. I met once with a man from China who was in missions, working with his own people.

He told me that "ma" and "ma" could be the difference between a horse and your mother depending on your inflexion. That's crazy!

Oh my goodness! This just makes me tired looking and thinking about it. I know that living there not being able to communicate would make you desperately want to learn the language. I think that would be the only thing that would make me plod on in learning.

Good job, Merri! I applaud you!!!
